Tips for Cleaning Your Teeth While Wearing Braces

Getting braces is often seen as a rite of passage for many teenagers. During this time, certain considerations need to be made, especially when you want to clean teeth with braces. There are a few ways to go about this so that you can have optimal dental health while not damaging your orthodontic device.

Brush and Floss

Individuals who wear braces should brush their teeth three times a day while flossing at least once. When you brush, you want to make sure you remove the elastic bands so that they do not get damaged. Brush for two minutes each time, and do not apply an excessive amount of force. Gentle is the way to go. In order to floss effectively, you will likely need to get a floss threader. This device will allow you to maneuver more easily around your braces.

Clean After Meals

Food can get caught between braces, and if it is allowed to remain there, then a significant amount of bacteria is capable of developing. After eating, you should clean your teeth with an interdental toothbrush. This will assist in removing any leftover food particles so that they are not stuck there all day long.

Take Care of Teeth

Other steps should be taken to care for your teeth and braces. Certain foods will need to be avoided. Gum, caramel and other sticky foods need to be abstained from during this time. Other foods to watch out for include:

  • Corn on the cob
  • Licorice
  • Popcorn
  • Candy
  • Nuts
  • Apples
  • Bagels

If you have a habit of biting your fingernails or chomping down on ice cubes, then you need to break those habits before your braces are put in. Biting down on something excessively hard can damage your teeth as well as your orthodontic device. Your dentist will go into more details with you about how you can clean teeth with braces during your initial consultation.
