Reasons Why Regular Dental Checkups Are Crucial for Overall Dental Health
February 4, 2026Teeth whitening is becoming popular as individuals invest in cosmetic dentistry to improve their smile.
If you’re planning to get your teeth whitened soon, there is some post-teeth whitening care you need to know when it comes to indulging in food or drinks after the procedure.
Keep reading to learn about food to enjoy and general tips that will help your post-care journey be a little easier and your smile brighter!
Post-Teeth Whitening Care 101
While not invasive like other procedures, teeth whitening (or sometimes referred to as dental bleaching) can still cause some sensitivity in your teeth.
Every person reacts differently, but a few general tips include:
- Eating lukewarm food within the first 48 hours of the procedure
- Avoiding extremely hot or cold beverages
- Using toothpaste created for sensitive teeth
Typically, sensitivity decreases within 48 hours, but it can sometimes last longer. If sensitivity doesn’t subside, we recommend reaching out to the dental professional who completed the procedure.
Food to Enjoy After Dental Bleaching
The first few days after teeth whitening are the most important for teeth stain prevention.
A general rule to think about as you plan for meals after your teeth whitening is if a food or drink will stain a white shirt, it’s likely to stain your teeth, too!
You should plan for what’s known as a “white diet” after the procedure. Any foods that are white, tan, or light in color are generally safe to eat.
Remember, though, your food and beverages shouldn’t be too hot or too cold!
- For proteins, you can enjoy things such as white fish, chicken, or tofu.
- For fruits and veggies, items such as bananas, cucumbers, white mushrooms, smoothies, and other light-colored fruits are great options; be sure to peel any fruits and veggies before diving in.
- Your carbohydrates can include white rice, potatoes, white bread, and pasta (avoid any colored sauces, though).
- For beverages, you want to make sure to avoid anything with added food coloring. You can enjoy water, milk, coconut milk, apple juice, or any other clear beverages.
- If you enjoy snacks, you can eat items like vanilla pudding, rice cakes, pretzels, white cheese, or any coconut-based treats.
The first 24 to 72 hours are the most crucial time for teeth stain prevention. Be sure to follow the “white diet” very closely to avoid staining.
After 72 hours, your teeth may still stain, but you should begin to reintroduce foods with more color (just avoid the worst offenders of staining, such as coffee, red wine, and food with added coloring).
After a week, your teeth will be fairly safe to enjoy all food. However, for longevity, food and beverages that can stain your teeth should be limited whenever possible.
If you do need to consume an item that stains, be sure to rinse your mouth with water or brush your teeth soon after!
