Dental Tips and Tricks for Halloween

If you ask children about their favorite part of Halloween, you can expect the answer to be candy. Parents and dentists may shudder at what too many sweets can do to oral health, but they can also help children make healthy choices. For Halloween, dentists have great tips and tricks to keep little smiles bright.

Dental Tips and Tricks for Halloween

Food for Thought

Avoid candy that is sticky, gooey, or hard, because it is more likely to stick to and between teeth. Another one to skip is extremely sour candy, which have a higher acid content that can cause erosion to tooth enamel. A better option is chocolate or any other candy that dissolves, leaving less of a layer in your mouth for bacteria to enjoy.

Teaching Moments

Parents have the opportunity on Halloween to promote healthy habits. Talk to your children about how too much sugar can affect their health, including their teeth. Encourage them to stick with smaller portions of treats, and explain why eating candy all day or in any amount may not be good for them.

Practice Makes Perfect

Children should brush and floss at least twice a day, or more if they have had too much candy that sticks to their teeth. You can try to limit their treat consumption to a few pieces at mealtime, and be sure to offer water to drink. Rinsing with water after eating sweets can loosen some of the sticky residue until the next brushing opportunity.

Share the Wealth

If your children were successful trick-or-treaters, they may have more candy than they can eat. Sharing the excess with family or friends can reduce the amount of treats on hand as well as the temptation to overindulge.

There is a growing trend for Halloween dentist candy buy-back programs, where children can exchange their stash for small toys or other non-candy rewards. Even if your child wants to keep all of the candy, you can still find ways to help them understand the importance of taking care of their teeth and bodies, for Halloween or any holiday.
