What Should I Do If My Tooth Falls Out?

What Should I Do If My Tooth Falls Out?

Did you know that every year more than five million people have had a tooth knocked out? This is a situation that can immediately cause panic, but it’s important to stay calm. A tooth can often be salvaged if prompt action is taken. Follow these steps if you ever find yourself in this dental emergency.

  1. Call Your Dentist ASAP

It’s important to take action right away if your tooth falls out. Try to schedule an appointment with an emergency dentist within the next 30 minutes to an hour. If you’re unable to make an appointment that quickly, don’t panic. Your specialist might still be able to save your tooth.

  1. Handle with Care

If you are still near the area where your tooth has fallen, pick it up carefully by the crown. Avoid touching the sensitive root, which can easily be damaged. Gently rinse any dirt or debris away with cool water, but skip drying.

  1. Fit It Back in Place

Your dentist might be able to salvage your tooth if it’s still intact. Try sliding your tooth back into place within its socket, making sure that it’s facing the right direction. Remember to never force your tooth to fit – if you’re having issues, skip to the next step.

  1. Keep It Moist

If placing your tooth back in its socket isn’t an option, you’ll need to keep it moist until you can see a dentist. Try placing it on the inside of your cheek or inside a glass of milk. There are also emergency tooth preservation kits like Save-a-Tooth that you can pick up at your local drugstore. Avoid wrapping your tooth in fabric or paper, since this can cause damage to the sensitive root.
